The End of a Challenging yet Rewarding Term!

Dear explorers of the future of education!      First of all, I had a productive term where I learned a lot about integrating technology into education. The strongest aspect of this course was definitely that it was not only theoretical but also practical. We prepared materials on AR, VR, and many other topics we covered, which made the course even more educational.    I can honestly say that the weakest aspect of the course was using blogs. I believe blog literacy is declining nowadays, and an Instagram account for education could be much more effective and reach a wider audience.    I didn’t find the course particul...

Boosting Writing Skills with ChatGPT!

Resim
Hello, dear readers! As you are aware, Chatgpt has been absent from our lives for some time, but it is gradually becoming a part of our daily life. In this task, we used artificial intelligence to help students improve their writing skills.      We designed a material using Canva that included step-by-step instructions for students.  After studying the 'Intercultural Topics' unit that we chose from the MEB preparatory class book, students will choose a festival or event from different countries and write a paragraph draft about it. Then, they will ask for feedback from Chatgpt (we also provided sample questions to students for feedback). Lastly, they will make adjustments on their paragraphs according to the feedback they receive.     After this part, they will introduce the events they chose to the class and get to know different cultures. Finally, there is a reflection questions section for students' thoughts on Chatgpt-supported writin...

Immersive Learning: Teaching Marine Pollution with VR

Resim
Ar and Vr: What are These?   AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) are innovative technologies that enhance language learning by making it more engaging and interactive. AR adds digital content to the real world, while VR offers fully immersive virtual environments. Their most important advantage in learning is that they can provide students with a realistic and authentic context, unlike the artificial classroom environment. The disadvantages of these include the difficulties in implementing it in classrooms with limited technology resources, as well as the possibility that virtual reality experiences would lead to learners addiction. Creating an  VR Integrated Teaching Material In this assignment, we created VR-integrated instructional materials focused on marine pollution. The worksheet consists of five steps: 1) a 360-degree video introducing marine pollution, giving students a realistic experience, 2) another video exploring the causes of marine polluti...

Engage, Learn, Apply: My Flipped Classroom Experiment!

Resim
Hello everyone!  Today, I’m excited to share my experience of designing and creating a flipped classroom video specifically for teaching vocabulary. So let's get started! What is a Flipped Classroom?   A flipped classroom is an instructional approach where students engage with new material at home, typically through videos or readings, and then apply that knowledge in class through interactive activities. This method promotes active learning and allows for more personalized instruction during class time. However, it requires students to be self-motivated and have access to necessary technology for out-of-class learning. Flipped Classroom Assignment and Procedure   In this Assignment, we made a 3-minute flipped classroom vocabulary teaching video. The target audience of the video was 5th graders. We used the 5th grade MEB book to choose the words and theme. The most challenging part of this assignment was creating and editing an animation video because it ...

From Corpus to Classroom: Making Context Meaningful!

Resim
Introduction  Hello again! Have you ever wondered how to make English lessons more engaged and connected to the real life? Thanks to the technology, there are many opportunities arise for both teachers & learners to provide meaningful context. Today, I'll share how my colleagues and I adapted one of them, corpus research, into a lesson plan. So for the curious minds, let's get started! The Task &  Design Process For this assignment, we prepared a lesson plan based on the ASSURE model, focusing on the correct use of many and much.  The material we designed for the lesson combines vocabulary from the Party unit in the MEB high school preparatory book with authentic examples from corpus-based research.  Additionally, we used Canva to engage students and avoid a boring worksheet.   In the worksheet we designed, we followed the steps of 'Ma et al. (2021) propose 4 design principles for corpus-based learning and teaching materials'. Relatedly, there ...

Welcome Back to the Future of Education!

Hello, everyone! Who I am? I hope you didn't think I forgot the blog! We continue where we left off! If I need to introduce myself again, my name is Başak, and I am a 21-year-old third-year ELT student. I use my blog to share a variety of experiences and assignments, as well as educational and technological topics. So, what’s this blog all about?  After a few months of rest I'm back and ready to dive into a critical topic for an ELT student in the digital age: the interaction between education and technology. If you want to study about the evolution of technology in English language instruction, as well as the underlying ideas and pedagogical principles that enable its use, this course—Current Issues in Teaching—is the place to be. As with my previous postings, I plan to share primarily educational content. My blog contains assignments I had in Current Issues in Teaching course. Also, as you are aware, innovations create new problems. Thus, we'll look at how these innovatio...

It's Reflection Time: End of the Term and My Whole Evaluation

What have I learned, what has changed?   Before taking this course, I thought that the use of technology in education was limited to a few applications such as Kahoot. For example, I had no idea that a writing course entailed more than simply allowing students to check their grammar on Grammarly. However, thanks to the dozens of websites, tools and applications I discovered this semester, I now have a much broader view about it.   At the beginning of the semester, I was already positive about the use of technology in education. but I didn't have enough usage knowledge to explain this. My perspective hasn't changed since then. Moreover, now I have enough tool knowledge to support it. As an Elt student, I think the widest area where technology can be used is the English lesson. The reason for this is that learning a language with technology dates back much further than many other areas and there are countless alternatives on the internet. So much so that there is even a separate...
