It's Reflection Time: End of the Term and My Whole Evaluation
What have I learned, what has changed?
Before taking this course, I thought that the use of technology in education was limited to a few applications such as Kahoot. For example, I had no idea that a writing course entailed more than simply allowing students to check their grammar on Grammarly. However, thanks to the dozens of websites, tools and applications I discovered this semester, I now have a much broader view about it.
At the beginning of the semester, I was already positive about the use of technology in education. but I didn't have enough usage knowledge to explain this. My perspective hasn't changed since then. Moreover, now I have enough tool knowledge to support it. As an Elt student, I think the widest area where technology can be used is the English lesson. The reason for this is that learning a language with technology dates back much further than many other areas and there are countless alternatives on the internet. So much so that there is even a separate term in our profession called 'computer assisted language learning'. If I consider this from the tasks I did during the year, I think that the fact that all of them contain visual and auditory elements is the key to students' focus and interest in the lesson.
How will this course affect my career when I become a teacher? What was my favorite task?
So, one of these tasks was my favorite? Definitely creating podcasts. I will absolutely utilize this to keep the lesson from becoming dull and to encourage students to do more than simply read what they wrote. I believe this would be an excellent end-of-semester assignment. It would also make homeworks, which kids considered tedious, more enjoyable during the holidays. On the other side, I didn't enjoy the digital story telling task so much. As I previously stated, the reason for this is that it requires a significant amount of time. Thus, such lengthy homework demotivates kids.
To summarize, I think this course is really essential and I think every teaching student in the 21st century should take it. If I were to suggest one way to improve this course, it would be to directly test the sites and programs. As in the last assignment, we should try these tools which we can suggest to our students use. Although tasks such as infographics, Google documents, etc. seemed useful, we used much more useful websites during the course. Some of them even offered students the opportunity to use daily dialogues with virtual scenarios. I think such experiences will give us more knowledge about the test-evaluate-apply to students.
That was all. I'm glad I took this course.
Thank you for reading my experiences and thoughts all this time. Stay well and online!
