Engage, Learn, Apply: My Flipped Classroom Experiment!

Hello everyone! Today, I’m excited to share my experience of designing and creating a flipped classroom video specifically for teaching vocabulary. So let's get started!

What is a Flipped Classroom?

A flipped classroom is an instructional approach where students engage with new material at home, typically through videos or readings, and then apply that knowledge in class through interactive activities. This method promotes active learning and allows for more personalized instruction during class time. However, it requires students to be self-motivated and have access to necessary technology for out-of-class learning.

Flipped Classroom Assignment and Procedure

In this Assignment, we made a 3-minute flipped classroom vocabulary teaching video. The target audience of the video was 5th graders. We used the 5th grade MEB book to choose the words and theme. The most challenging part of this assignment was creating and editing an animation video because it is a time-consuming task. Also, the sounds we recorded had different volumes, which required us to make adjustments for the sounds as well. The only way we could overcome these challenges was dividing the tasks properly. We actively engaged with my group members via WhatsApp and supported each other with the parts we struggled with by sharing the tasks. We also prepared a quiz so students can apply what they learned after watching the video.

My Review of Flipped Classroom Approach

I find the flipped classroom to be especially effective in language classes where time is limited. Students can engage the content from anywhere before class, understand the core idea through a few minutes of video, and then apply it to the lesson. I believe that as technology advances and platforms like YouTube gain popularity, approaches like the flipped classroom will become more common.

The tools we used
Animaker for the animation
Capcut for video and audio adjustments
Quizizz for the interactive after-quiz

Here is the video! Don't forget to share your ideas in the comments, so we can discuss how I can improve our fipped-teaching video.
