AI assisted writing with Magic School: Interview with Cleopatra!

Using Magic School

First and foremost, I believe this is the most efficient AI tool I have ever used. When I evaluate Magic School in terms of education, I appreciate that it includes unique content and tools for students to reflect on, such as feedback. However, I had some difficulties while using it. For example, in the chatbot section, the character constantly utilizes repetitive sentences. The second one is, despite the question I asked "Can you explain it briefly?" it is not yet improved in giving short answers. Although there is a summarize option on the site, it is a minus that the AI does not understand when such criteria are stated directly in the question.

Pros and Cons

So, what are my thoughts on using this technology in education? As an Elt student, I believe that writing abilities are vital, particularly in university level. It's pretty brilliant because magic school provides students with pre-made instructions that are related to the prior discourse. This allows students to understand how to proceed with a review request. Students can also pose their own questions. However, as a teacher, I believe that education is essential not just for acquiring knowledge, but also for developing social skills. Previously, it was unpredictable for AI programs to give feedback like a human. but now they can comment on the flow of the text as well as grammatical errors. However, I am concerned that this reduces social dialogue between students.

My Thoughts

I support students receiving AI feedback individually and sometimes teachers giving homework in this direction. It is a perfect alternative for people who do not attend any school and want to improve their writing skills on their own. However, as I said, the purpose of assignments that involve collaboration or feedback is actually for students to improve their social skills and make friends by communicating among themselves. We should not forget that the time a child spends with his peers at school as well as the communication he establishes during group assignments outside of school, are critical for child development. As a teacher, I believe that other teachers should take this into consideration. While giving homework, we should prevent children from adapting too much to technology as well as keeping up with the developing world. The communication problem is a big problem for our age and I think it will increase in the future.

In short, although I really like this AI tool and will encourage it for individual use in the future, I pay attention to the assignments I give to make sure it does not reduce student interaction.

The interview I did was quite entertaining. You can look at my report, the feedback I received from AI and the version I have edited accordingly, and write in the comments how useful you think it is.
